Trifocal Lens Replacement Surgery in Turkey

Trifocal Lenses, or Trifocal IOLs, are one of the types of lenses used to treat cataract disease. During cataract surgery, the natural opaque lens inside the eye is removed and replaced with an IOL (artificial) lens. After this procedure, known as laser eye surgery, the patient can completely get rid of glasses.

Trifocal lenses, which are a type of IOL, which means intraocular lens, give the patient three focal distances. These are reading vision or near vision, intermediate vision, and far vision. Depending on the distance the eye focuses, the light is refracted in the lens, providing clear vision at one of the three viewing distances. Thanks to the lens replacement surgery, the focusing power of the eye will increase significantly.

Lens replacement surgery is performed in the same way as modern cataract surgery. In both of these operations, the natural lens in the eye is replaced with an IOL. The trifocal IOL is performed to reduce or completely avoid the need for contact lenses or eyeglasses.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Trifocal Lens Replacement Surgery?

While the suitability of this surgery may vary depending on individual circumstances, there are certain criteria that make someone a good candidate for trifocal lens replacement. Typically, individuals who are experiencing presbyopia, which is the natural age-related loss of near vision, are ideal candidates for this procedure. Additionally, those who have cataracts or other refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism may also benefit from trifocal lens replacement. It is important for candidates to have overall good eye health and realistic expectations regarding the outcomes of the surgery. To determine if you are a suitable candidate for trifocal lens replacement surgery, it is best to consult with an experienced ophthalmologist who can evaluate your specific needs and provide personalized recommendations.

How is Trifocal Lens Surgery Performed?

The surgery is typically done on an outpatient basis and involves the following steps:

      1. Anesthetic: Before the procedure, local or topical anesthesia is administered to ensure your comfort during the surgery.
      2. Incision: A small incision is made on the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye. This incision allows access to the natural lens of the eye.
      3. Lens Removal: The natural lens, which may have a cataract or be clear but affected by presbyopia, is gently removed from the eye using specialized instruments. This step is often performed using phacoemulsification, a technique that breaks up the lens into small pieces for easier removal.
      4. Trifocal Lens Implantation: The trifocal intraocular lens is carefully inserted into the eye through the same incision. The lens is positioned to replace the natural lens and restore clear vision at multiple distances, including near, intermediate, and far.
      5. Incision Closure: Once the lens is in place, the incision is usually self-sealing, eliminating the need for stitches. The eye may be protected with a shield or patch.

What is the Difference Between Trifocal and Multifocal Lenses?

Cataract patients used to be treated with monofocal lenses. These lenses provided good vision only at distance or only near. Later, monofocal lenses were developed, so patients began to see both far and near clearly. However, monofocal IOLs were also insufficient in situations that required clear mid-range vision, such as working with a PC, doing workouts and driving a car.

Trifocal IOLs have three focal points. Thanks to this lens, patients achieve a combination of extended near, intermediate and far vision. Thus, patients have a much clearer vision and wide viewing angle without the need for anything else such as glasses or contact lenses.

Success Rate in Trifocal Lens Surgery

Patients can become fully accustomed to trifocal lenses in just a few days after surgery. This means gaining clear vision without the need for glasses. After one eye has healed sufficiently in a period of 7 to 10 days, it is recommended that the other eye be operated in the same way. Having surgery on both eyes provides much better vision quality, preventing eye strain and focusing problems.

The proportion of patients who do not have to wear glasses as a result of trifocal lens replacement surgery is over 90%. Since each eye has different anatomy and genetic characteristics, the recovery process after surgery is also different. If the shape of the cornea changes while the eye is healing, the refractive error, also called the eye power, changes. In today’s conditions, the best choice among IOLs is the trifocal lens.
