Spondylolisthesis is the displacement of the spinal bones in the waist, over each other, caused by congenital structural differences, traumas (accidents and blows), and strain on the lumbar vertebrae. Surgical intervention is recommended for individuals with severe symptoms.

Spondylolisthesis operation is performed under general or spinal (epidural) anesthesia and it takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to perform. However, if there is also hernia formation, the duration of surgery may be longer.

Spondylolisthesis is generally seen in individuals who do heavy work and do heavy sports. The causes of this disorder include congenital structural defects, aging, trauma (accident and impact), carelessness after waist surgery, and excessive strain on the lumbar vertebrae.

Spondylolisthesis initially presents with waist pain. If left untreated, symptoms such as leg pain and leg numbness due to compression of the nerve roots in the spinal canal, muscle weakness (difficulty in walking and standing), urination and defecation problems, inflammation and swelling, and tenderness in the waist area occur in the future.

Surgical intervention is recommended for individuals with symptoms that affect their lives.

It is a surgical intervention that aims to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord and nerves and to fix the slipped vertebral discs in place. This surgery, which is usually performed under general anesthesia or spinal (epidural) anesthesia, takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour. If individuals also have a hernia, the surgery time may be longer.

It is important for individuals with symptoms to first undergo a physical examination. During the physical examination, manual examination and moving examinations are performed. According to the physical examination, the surgery is planned. After the planning of surgery, there are pre-operative examinations such as learning of patient’s medical record, blood tests, Chest X-ray, waist X-ray, computed tomography (CT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and anesthesiologist consultation.

According to the patient’s medical record, surgeon may ask for additional tests and examinations from different branches.

The main aims of pre-operative examinations are evaluate the patient’s risk and maitain patient’s health condition.

Spinal (epidural) anesthesia which is numbing the lower body from waist or general anesthesia which is numbing whole body and put patient to sleep are preffered. The anesthesia type is determined according to the patient’s situation and pre-operative examination’s result by the anesthesiologist.

There are two methods of performing this surgery, which is generally referred to as spinal fusion: open and laparoscopic (closed) method. The surgery method is determined by the doctor according to the degree of discomfort and the patient.

In the open surgery method, a 10 to 15 cm incision is made in the sliding spinal disc area. In this surgery method, the joints and ligaments and some of the spinal bones are removed in order to relieve the compressed nerves under pressure in order to reduce the pressure on the nerve tissues. Spinal fusion is then performed to establish the balance and stability of the spine. Spinal fusion is a procedure that aims to fuse the spinal discs and allow them to move freely. In this operation, surgical materials such as grafts, screws and platinum are used to fix the spinal discs and accelerate the union between the spinal discs. After the surgical procedures are completed, the incision is stitched and the surgery is terminated.

In the laparoscopic surgery method, 3 or 4 small incisions are made on the slipped discs of the spine. Laparoscopic surgical instruments are passed through these incisions and images are provided. Slipped spinal discs are corrected in the same way as the procedures performed in open surgery. Surgical materials such as grafts, screws and platinum are used to fix the spinal discs and accelerate their union. The operation is terminated after the surgical intervention is completed.

After this surgery, patients stay in the hospital for 1 or 2 nights. Patients should use a waist corset for waist support after this surgery. For the first month, patients are advised to rest plenty and are allowed to sit for no more than 30 minutes.

After this surgery, doctor’s checks to check the condition of the platinum and screws should not be missed. Physical therapy is generally recommended for patients. Physical therapy is aimed at accelerating and improving recovery and regaining the mobility lost due to discomfort and surgery. For this reason, individuals should definitely start physical therapy after surgery.

Improvement in individuals is seen after 6 months. However, full recovery and gaining mobility takes 1 year.

      • Correct use of prescribed medicines
      • Using of waist corset
      • Physical therapy should be started
      • Avoiding sudden movements when sitting and standing
      • Paying attention to movements in daily life
      • Avoiding strenuous sports activities
      • Avoiding heavy lifting until full recovery is observed
      • Keeping cleand and dry of incisions areas

Spondylolisthesis causes serious symptoms in individuals. These symptoms include numbness and pain in the leg, poor posture and weakness. And many of these symptoms affect individuals’ daily lives and limit their mobility. After this surgery, individuals’ nerve compression, mobility, pain and numbness, and posture disorders are treated. In this way, individuals continue their lives in a healthier way after the recovery period is over.
