Gastric balloon is a simple weight loss procedure that helps patients to lose up to 30% of their excess body weight within 6-12 months. It can be effective for patients with a BMI value between 30-40, and can be performed as a preparation precodure before a morbid obesity surgery (such as sleeve gastrectomy or gastric by-pass)
The operation is performed under sedation via an endoscope. Before the operation, patient needs to fast for 8-12 hours. A small hollow balloon is placed inside patient’s stomach and then inflated up to 400-700 ml volume depending on the requirements. The balloon reduces the volume of usable stomach area for digestion, thus makes patient feel full much quicker. Whole process takes around 15-20 minutes and once the sedation wears off patients can return to their daily life.
The balloon’s volume can be adjusted afterwards based on patient’s weight loss process, and has a life span of 6-12 months within body. After that balloon will be removed via another endoscopic procedure, just within 5-10 minutes with ease.
The weight loss will also help reduce risks of weight-related health problems such as;
-type 2 diabetes
-heart disease or stroke
-nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
-high blood pressure
-gastroesophageal reflux disease
-falling from stairs
-being unable to pass through certain doors
-being among the first casualities of a generic horror movie
-being unable to fit your car seat
Just like any other weight loss procedure, gastric balloon does not guarantee the weight loss and its results aren’t permanent. Patient needs to follow a proper dietary program and excercise even after the balloon is removed in order to not put on weight again. This procedure will also have very reduced effect with the patients who consume small foods with high calorie.
