Cervical disc herniation is the age-related deformation of the gel-like discs located between the cervical vertebrae. Cervical disc herniation has symptoms that affect the spinal cord and nerve roots. These symptoms can cause discomfort in individuals that prevent them from continuing their daily lives.

In cases where individuals’ lives are affected, Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion surgery is recommended. This operation, performed under general anesthesia, takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour.

WHO ARE THE ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES FOR CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION OPERATION?

The causes of cervical disc herniation include structural features (such as a thin neck), constantly looking in the same direction, cold air-conditioned environments, the neck always remaining in the same position, spending too much time with devices such as computers and televisions, desk jobs and age-related deformities.

Symptoms include difficulty walking, unsteadiness while walking, inability to hold and drop objects, unilateral pain radiating to the arm, numbness and pain affecting the fingers.

Cervical disc herniation surgery is recommended if individuals have difficulty in continuing their daily lives and if it causes serious symptoms such as muscle weakness.

HOW IS CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION SURGERY PERFORMED?

Cervical disc herniation surgery is an operation to remove and relieve the hernia that puts pressure on the nerve roots and spinal cord and to restore muscle functions. Today, Endoscopic and microsurgical methods are used for cervical disc herniation surgery. This surgery, performed under general anesthesia, takes between 45 minutes and 1 hour.

      • PREPARATION

It is important to have physical examination firstly. During the physical examination, doctor perform manual examination and moving examination. According to the examinations, surgery is planned. After the planning of surgery, patients have pre-operative examinations such as learning of patient’s anamnesis (medical record), blood tests, chest X-ray, neck X-ray, computed tomography (CT Scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and anesthesiologist consultation.

According to the patient’s medical record, surgeon may ask for additional tests and examinations from different branches.

The main aims of pre-operative examinations are evaluate the patient’s risk and maitain patient’s health condition.

      • ANESTHESIA

General anesthesia is applied which is numbing the whole body and put patient to sleep for the anterior cervical discectomy and fusion operation.

      • CERVICAL DISC HERNIATION OPERATION TECHNIQUE

Cervical disc herniation surgeries are performed by two methods: endoscopic or microsurgery. The appropriate method is determined by the doctor according to the patient and the hernia condition.

The endoscopic method usually starts with an incision of approximately 7 mm in the back of the neck. Endoscopic surgical instruments are inserted through the incision. In this way, the inside of the skin is seen. The purpose of this operation is to remove the hernia that puts pressure on the nerves and spinal cord. The hernia is removed through the incision. In this method, tissue damage does not occur because tissue and muscles are expanded rather than cut. After the surgical intervention is completed, the surgery is terminated by stitching.

In the microsurgical method, a small incision is made from the back of the neck.Special surgical instruments are inserted through this incision. The procedure is performed with imaging surgical instruments, operating microscopes, and microsurgical hand tools. In this way, the herniated tissue that puts pressure on the nerves is removed. This method is less invasive. In this way, muscles and tissues are not damaged. The surgery is terminated after the surgical interventions are completed.

Patients stay at the hospital for 1 or 2 nights after the surgery. Individuals should rest for the first 10 days after discharge and should not move except for toilet needs. With the neck brace, healing and union of the operated areas becomes easier. After 10 days, individuals should start moving slowly and walking. Individuals are recommended to use orthopedic pillows. Patients should take care to lie on their side rather than face down after the surgery.

If there are serious muscle problems due to hernia, physical therapy is recommended by the doctor. It is important for individuals to start physical therapy for their recovery and strengthening of their neck muscles.
