  Tummy Tuck- Abdominoplasty- Surgical Phase

1- The Operation

Most commonly, the surgeon will make a long incision from hipbone to hipbone, ,just above the pubic area. A second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. With partial abdominoplasty, the incision is much shorter and the navel may not be moved, although it may be pulled into an unnatural shape as the skin is tightened and stitched.
Next, the surgeon separates the skin from the abdominal wall all the way up to your ribs and lifts a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen. These muscles are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into their new position. This provides a firmer abdominal wall and narrows the waistline. The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin is removed. A new hole is cut for your navel, which is then stitched in place. Finally, the incisions will be stitched, dressings will be applied, and a temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.
In partial abdominoplasty, the skin is separated only between the incision line and the navel. This skin flap is stretched down, the excess is removed, and the flap is stitched back into place.

2. Anesthesia

While general anaesthesia and epidural are applied for entire abdominaplasty, for mini abdominoplasty spinal anaesthesia is applied

3. Length Of Surgery

2-3 hours

4. Length Of Stay

1-2 day

5. Bruises

Some bruises may occur around the incision

6. Scars

A faint scar over the incision area which will fade with time the course of time may occur.

7. Swelling

Swelling of the abdomen is normal following surgery. During the first week your clothes may fit more tightly and you may weigh more than before. This swelling will subside from the second week after surgery but some lower abdominal fullness persists. You may expect to see about 50% of your total contour improvement at two weeks and about 75% at one month. It usually takes an additional two months for the last of the swelling to recede. Occasional patients may see continued improvement up to six months after surgery but changes beyond three months are subtle. It is important to understand that it will take between six months to a year for the scars to mature fully. Tissue oil massage helps immensely.

8. Discomfort

For the first week, you may feel uncomfortable while standing upright.

9. Incisions

A horizontal incision just within or above the pubic area is applied.

10. Stitches

Stitches will be removed at the end of the 2nd or 3rd week

11. Bandages

No bandages involved in this operation.

12. Garment

You may benefit from a special garment to reduce the edema formation

13. Numbness

Numbness above the incision line will occur and will disappear after a while.

14. Scars

Following both a complete and a mini-abdominoplasty, you will have a horizontal scar low on the abdomen. After the complete abdominoplasty you will have a circular scar within the umbilicus. A different type or location of scar may sometimes be necessary because of individual anatomic variations but this would be decided upon beforehand. Although occasional findings during the operation dictate that the scar be somewhat longer or in a different position than planned before surgery, I will make every effort to keep the scar as short and inconspicuous as possible.
